The closing event of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union will take place on December 18 at the Flagey Art Centre in Brussels – the Sandglasses audio-visual performance by composer Justė Janulytė. Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė, Minister of Culture Šarūnas Birutis, officials of EU institutions, diplomats and the international community of Brussels will participate at the closing event.

Sandglasses is a meditative and inspirational composition exploring the audio, visual, and symbolic meaning of sand timers. From its very opening, this unique project evoked exceptional interest from the international public, and became the first large Lithuanian composition to be included in the network of major European contemporary music festivals - Reseau Varese. The project was produced by Vilniaus Festivaliai.

Sandglasses audio-visual project for four cellos, live electronics and visual and light installations will be performed by the Lithuanian cellists Edmundas Kulikauskas, Povilas Jacunskas, Onutė Švabauskaitė and Rūta Tamutytė. Live electronics are performed by Michele Tadini and Antonello Raggi. The lighting designer is Vilius Vilutis.

The most impressive part of the project, the video projections, were created by the famous Italian artist Luca Scarzella. Images are projected onto four giant cylinders, the sand timers, turning into tulle installations enshrouding the cellists who play accompanied by live electronics.

One of the best in Brussels, the Flagey 900-seat concert hall, built as a radio studio in the 1940s, will be specially adjusted for the performance of this unconventional visual music art composition. The Sandglasses performance will end the Lithuanian Culture season organised by Flangey in November and December.

During the Presidency the official cultural programme in Belgium included around fifty events of classical and contemporary music, visual arts, cinema, theatre, literature, poetry and interdisciplinary arts, the partners of which were the prestigious cultural and arts institutions BOZAR, Flagey, CINEMATEK, the Museum of Fine Arts in Gent, Klara and Flandria music festivals and EU institutions.
