The Political and Security Committee, PSC, is a permanent body within the Council of the EU monitoring the international situation related to the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) issues, including Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), and contributes to the design of the EU policies by delivering its opinion and proposals to the Council. It also monitors the implementation of the agreed CFSP ir CSDP policies. Being responsible for the crisis response in the field of the CFSP, the Committee exercises political control of the crisis management operations and ensures their strategic supervision.

The Committee coordinates, supervises and monitors the work of various working parties of the Council in the areas of CFSP and CSDP. The member states in the PSC are represented at the ambassadorial level. The meetings of the PSC are chaired by the EEAS and are held twice a week; in case of necessity, additional meetings are held.
